Four DKICP alumni present post-graduate residency research at HPhA online event

With their audience on screen instead of in a large conference room, four alumni of the Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy recently presented their post-graduate residency research projects to an online meeting of the Hawaiʻi Pharmacists Association (HPhA). Attended by pharmacist leaders and preceptors, this year’s online meeting provided a forum for residents to be evaluated on their presentation, research quality, ability to answer questions and the impact of their project on pharmacy practice at their residency sites.

The four DKICP alumni presenters were:

• Dr. Edwina Leung (Class of 2015), who completed a PGY2 specialty residency in psychiatry and mental health at the Hawaiʻi State Hospital, presented her project titled “Clinical implementation of pharmacogenomic testing at a forensic psychiatric hospital: a pilot study examining implementation strategies, prescriber acceptability, and barriers to the service”.
• Dr. Nicholas Tsoi (Class of 2019), who is a PGY1 clinical pharmacy resident at DKICP and Hawaiʻi Pacific Health, presented his project titled “Evaluation of pharmacy supported diabetic ketoacidosis management”.
• Dr. Rachel Randall (Class of 2019), who is a PGY1 clinical pharmacy resident at DKICP and Hawaiʻi Pacific Health, presented her project titled “Impact of pharmacy-led ASP timeouts to assess piperacillin-tazobactam use”.
• Dr. Kelsey Noetzelmann (Class of 2019), who is a PGY1 clinical pharmacy resident at Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu, HI, presented her project titled “Vancomycin therapeutic drug monitoring based on area under the curve”.

Under normal circumstances, the HPhA Conference would serve as rehearsal session for these presenters prior to the Western States Conference, where pharmacy residents from the entire U.S. Western Region typically present their research projects in a platform presentation, notes Dean Carolyn Ma. “The Western States Conference also allows residents to gather, share in the camaraderie of their grueling year and celebrate the accomplishment of residency completion. This year, however, the Western States Conference will be held virtually.

“But whether online or in person, the quality of these four presentations was exceptional, and I congratulate Edwina, Nicholas, Rachel and Kelsey on a job well done,” she adds.
